Echo is on the Way!

On Monday, we sent out every child's Echo dolphin to the location that you sent in.  If your child did not have an address, I have arranged for someone I know to complete the project for your child.  If you would like to let your friends and family know,  they should receive them soon!

Make Your Own Country Map Project

Today, I shared with the class a project that they will be working on at home.

Your child is going to create his/her own country map.  They worked on the rough draft in class today and I sent home paper for them to use for their maps.  Students came up with such creative ideas for their country maps.  Please read the directions carefully to ensure that your child everything he/she needs on her map to receive full credit on the assignment.  Here is the example I shared with the class today.  Notice that it has everything on the checklist that your child brought home today.  We also talked about the importance of neat handwriting and coloring the project neatly.

Map Skills

We have been studying Map Skills in class.  We have been learning about various types of maps and tools that are included on a map such as a map key, compass rose, etc.  We will be working on our dolphin letters so we can get those sent out shortly!  Also, I will be assigning a map project next Friday.  More information to be coming soon!

Word Study

Word study can help students make connections between phonetic rules and apply them to their written work.  The past two weeks we have done a variety of activities.  One activity we have done has been word sorts.  Students are given a list of words and they need to organize them by phonetic rule.  Here is an example of a word sort we completed.

We also have been learning about onset and rhyme.  Students worked with a partner to create words using onset and rhyme.  Here are some examples of words the students created.

We have also been working on assessing each student's knowledge of our third-grade high-frequency words.  We will be beginning Buddy Spelling soon!

Echo's Adventures Project

We have been learning about map skills as a part of our first social studies unit.  Today we designed our Echo dolphins for our Echo Adventure project.

We’re asking that you provide the name and address of one relative and/or close friend that lives in another state who would be willing to participate in our dolphin exchange.  The recipient will be asked to use a provided template to write a short letter about how Echo spent his time in his/her state.  He or she is also encouraged to send pictures documenting his visit.  For example, someone living in New York might take a picture with Echo in front of the Statue of Liberty.  When Echo is returned to school, our class will plot his travels on a map and share the information received with each other.  It will be a tremendous learning experience for your child.  We are very excited about it!!

A form is in your child's take home folder for you to include the information needed for this project.  If you do not know someone in another state, please just email me and let me know.  I will help your child find a location to send it to.  Thank you for your help!

LMC Scavenger Hunt

Today in the LMC, we did a scavenger hunt to learn about the various areas in the library.  We learned about how the Dewey Decimal System works and students were challenged to find various books and authors in the library using QR codes.  We learned so much and were able to practice looking for titles using our online system.

Welcome to 3-4!

Welcome to third grade!  We already off to a great start!  All the students are already working hard on various things in the classroom!  I can't wait for all the fun and adventures this new school year will bring!
