Another Flat Stanley Returned

 Wynston was so excited that his Flat Stanley came back form the lovely state of Michigan.  His Flat Stanley went to visit his grandparents.  He had quite a few adventures while on his trip!  He returned with lots of flyers and even a map of the community they live in.  Watervliet, Michigan sounds like a wonderful place!

Another Flat Stanley Came Back

 Mia's Flat Stanley came back from the lovely state of Ohio.  Her grandparents had a wonderful time teaching Flat about their state.  They taught us all about Columbus, Ohio.  Her grandparents even sent her a buckeye in the mail!

Our First Flat Stanley Returned!

 Our first Flat Stanley returned.  Luke's first Flat Stanley returned from the beautiful state of Indiana.  His Flat visited his grandparents in , Indiana.  He had a wonderful time learning about this fantastic state.

Reading This Week

 This week, we read a memoir entitled The Upside Down Boy. We focusedon asking and answering questions to help us understand the text. We also read avariety of poems by Eloise Greenfield. Students focused on the following poetryelements: lines, stanzas, rhyme schemes, imagery, and figurative language. Newvocabulary was introduced and embedded throughout the texts. We revisited synonyms and antonyms with a fun song to remember their meanings!



Writing a Letter

 In writing, students learned about letter writing. We discussed the differences between formal and informal correspondence. Students drafted letters to their favorite restaurants using a formal business letter template. In grammar, we focused on singular and plural nouns.

Foundational Skills

Students focused on vowel-consonant e syllable words. We discussed the “magic e” and how it makes the word have a long vowel sound (i.e. make). In cursive, students learned i and t and practiced making words.


 

Weather Research

Students began working on a small group project in the LMC that integrates with our science unit.  They are researching extreme weather in small groups and will be putting together a short media presentation.  This week we started our research. Each student chose a role for their forecast and got started using books to help them learn more about their extreme weather.

Learning More About the Weather

 Students enjoyed a “Mystery Science” lesson about predicting when it will storm. They observed various clouds and their changes to draw conclusions about the weather. Students created a mini book about each type of cloud and its characteristics.

Happy Birthday, JD!

Happy birthday, JD!  JD's mom came and shared the story The Night I Followed the Dog with the class to help celebrate his birthday.  It is about a boy who decides to follow his dog at night to see what he is up to and wow!  He learns so much about his best friend.

Happy birthday, Georgia!

We were so excited to have Georgia's mom come a read to the class today to celebrate Georgia's birthday which happened over the weekend.  She came and read the book Woodpecker Wants a Waffle.  What a cute story!







Flat Stanley

 We have written our letters and our Flat Stanleys are in the mail!  Please let your family and friends know that they should be getting them shortly.  We can’t wait to get them back and hear about their adventures!

This week in Chapter 2 Math

 Students continued learning and exploring various mental math strategies. They utilized these strategies to solve multi-digit addition problems in a variety of ways. As a class, we focused on key words, such as: “sum”, “total”, and “in all”. Finding these words and phrases in number stories helped us understand what operation to use.
