Xtra Math

This year, if your child would like to practice his/her math facts at home, they can log into their Xtra Math account.  The program starts with addition and will help them progress through subtraction, multiplication and division.  This is not required, however, it is something you can do if you so choose to help you support their math skills at home.  In order for their account to be linked to school, you will need to follow the directions that are included in your child’s Friday backpack mail.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Flat Stanley Update

Everyone has finished their letters!  We will be learning how to address an envelope next week and then your child’s Flat Stanley will be postmarked and off on their adventures!  Please let your family and friends know that they will be on their way shortly and to be looking for them in the next couple of weeks.  (Snail mail takes time!)

Technology Lesson

Today we had a special visitor!  Maria Goldstein came today to help the students learn more about how to use their chromebooks.

Reader's Workshop

We were so excited to start Reading Workshop in our classroom!  We discussed everyone’s roles and responsibilities as a reader. Students also got into the routine of selecting their own books during independent reading time. We reflected on our lives as readers and practiced responding to texts.

We are so excited to be sending out our Flat Stanley projects soon.  Students are currently working on their rough drafts of their letters.  We can't wait to learn about all the adventures that Stanley is going to have!

Fraction Math Unit

Students have been doing an amazing job collaborating with each other to solve a variety of fraction thinking tasks! Our focus this week was comparing fractions.  Students discovered they can find equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number. They also used fraction tiles to compare fractions. The fraction unit test will be on Tuesday, April 24th. A review guide will be going home on Monday.

Persuasive Writing

Students began their final persuasive piece about the best pet! They looked at some models and brainstormed strong reasons to support their opinions. We began filling out our graphic organizers and will complete our final pieces next week.

Economy Unit

We started our new social studies unit: the economy! We focused on important terminology, like “buyers, sellers, market, goods, and services”. Students participated in a meaningful discussion about how people buy and sell goods. Students learned that there are costs and benefits when you purchase a good or service.

Using Context Clues and Figurative Language

This week, we worked on using context clues to figure out unknown words within a variety of texts. Students also practiced going back to the text to find evidence to support their answers. Using clues to determine the theme of the story was another area of focus.

We also spent time focusing on figurative language.  We learned about idioms, similes, metaphors, hyperbole and personification.  We will continue to analyze figurative language as we begin our poetry unit.
