One Thursday, we learned about periscopes and how they work.  We learned about how light reflects to help us see objects in the periscope.

Opaque, Translucent, and Transparent

Today we learned about items being....

Opaque- not letting light through

Translucent- letting some light through

Transparent- letting all light pass through

We tried a variety of different objects to determine how much light they let pass through.  The students had a wonderful time experimenting and learning the vocabulary!

Rays, Line, and Line Segments, Oh My!

We have been very busy learning about geometry.  We have learned a lot during this unit!  We have learned about rays, lines, line segments, angles, and much more!  The students have learned about two dimensional and three dimensional shapes.  When reviewing for the unit test, you can help your child by reminding them to include points, letters, angle signs, and arrows.  Labeling correctly is very important and this will help your child be successful.

Northeast States and Capitals

Don't forget to keep encouraging your child to review the locations and capitals of the Northeast states.  Each week, we are doing one activity to review them.  You can help them by giving them the blank map at home to help them practice.  I sent one home, but if you need another, just let me know.

The Science Behind Your Eyes

This week we observed how our eyes react to light and we learned how our pupils dilate and why.  We also learned how light helps us see an image.

Math MAP Testing

We will be taking the math MAP test on Wednesday, January 14th at 10:15 am.  You can help your child by making sure that get plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast.

Northeast States and Capitals Test

I passed out information to help the students practice the Northeast states and capitals today in class.  They are to cut out the flashcards and bring them to school tomorrow to be checked.  Then they will come home to help your child continue to review until the test on February 12th.  They will be tested on the location of each state and the capital.  We will be labeling them all in class tomorrow.  You can help your child by using the worksheet and answer key in the packet to help them study.

Field Trip

We will be going to the Symphony on May 1, 2015.  We are sending the slips home early because Mr. Deptula needs to purchase the tickets ahead of time to secure this date.  Please send in your money and slip before January 23rd.  If you are interested in being a chaperone, there is a form attached.  Thank you for your help!

Light

We have begun our next science unit, light!  We started off today by using a mirror and flashlight to explore light and how it works.  We learned today about how light is emitted and different sources of light.  Here are some pictures and videos from class today showing what the students learned.

Welcome Back!

I know this wasn't the week that anyone planned, but welcome back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful break.  Since we missed MAP testing this week, I will let you know as soon as it is rescheduled.  Have a great weekend!
