Unit Ten Math

Over the next couple of weeks we will be completing Unit 10 in Everyday Math.  The students will be reviewing some skills they learned at the beginning of the year and building upon them with more complex tasks.  For example, we have learned, maximum, minimum, mode, range and median.  Now we will also be learning mean.  This will be a fun way to end math this year.

Robots of the Future

This past week we read an article about how robots have been created to help complete simple tasks and solve complex problems.  The students then had the opportunity to design their own robots.  They are posted on their kidblogs for you to view.  They designed a picture of their robot and then explained how they would be useful.

Spelling Homework

For the next couple of weeks I am going to let the students choose whichever spelling homework activities they would like to do for their homework.  They must complete two activities, but they can select which ones they would like to complete.  The homework is still due Thursday.  Have a great week!

Solar Award Pictures

We had a great time at the Solars today.  Here are pictures from the event.  The Paparazzi caught a few of our classmates striking a pose for the camera.

Solar Awards

We are so excited!  Your child has been studying one of the planets planets and he/she has been teaching their peers about it.  The students have voted and now the Solar Awards are this Friday in the afternoon.  Your child received an invitation today.  We are going to have a great time!  Please look over the invitation and let me know if you have any questions.  This is a student only event.

Thank You!

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers.  They brightened my day and the classroom!  It was so thoughtful of you all to think of me!

Math- Unit 9

We are continuing to learn more about multi-digit multiplication.  The students have mastered the partial products method and we are now learning about lattice multiplication.  You can help your child by continuing to practice their multiplication facts at home.  This will help increase their accuracy.

Chicago

This week we began our unit on Chicago.  The students were introduced to some interesting facts including the historical background of the Chicago flag.  They learned why there are three white stripes (for the North, West, and South Sides of Chicago), two blue stripes (for the two branches of the Chicago River), and four six pointed stars (for Fort Dearborn, Chicago Fire, the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, and the Century of Progress- an exposition that took place in 1933).  We will be learning more about these events as we get deeper into our unit.

The Chicago Symphony

We had a wonderful time at the Chicago Symphony today.  The students were able to experience classical music and learn how stories are told through music.  Thank you to the parents who came with us.  We could not have such successful events without your support.
