Chapter 4 Movies

Today, your child created a subtraction video with a partner.  This would be a great way for your child to review for their upcoming math test on Thursday.  You can have your child write down the problem on paper and solve it and then watch the video to see if they got the correct answer.  Happy viewing!

Weather Tools

This week we have been learning about various tools meteorologists use to help them predict the weather.  We created a flip chart of all the tools and took notes to help us understand their uses.  These will come home before the assessment to help them study.

Fire Safety

Lt. Aleckson came from the Arlington Heights Fire Department today.  We learned about what to do if there is a fire and about fire prevention.  He also dressed up and taught us about the various pieces of equipment he has to help keep him safe when there is a fire.

More Echos are Back!

Chloe's Echo came back from sunny Winter Park near Orlando, FL.  He learned all about Florida and the beautiful sunny weather there.  He enjoyed swimming, visiting restaurants and museums.  He also helped Chloe's family pick up a little after Hurricane Irma.  Echo also had a fantastic time visiting and hanging out with their dogs, Lily and Hughey.

Evan's Echo was returned from Asheville, North Carolina.  While there he had a great time with their friends.  He got to visit apple orchards, drive the Blue Ridge Parkway and visited the largest home, The Bilmore Estate.  He had a wonderful time in the Appalachian Mountains!

Dylan's Echo came back from Cleveland, Ohio.  While in Cleveland, he visited so many wonderful sports stadiums and took pictures at each location.  He visitied where the CLeveland Browns and Cleveland Cavleiers play.  He also went to several museums!  He had a great time visiting with Dylan's family.

Dylans' Echo flew back from Ormand Beach, FL.  He had a great time swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, the Halifax River, and visiting the Embry-Riddle Aeronatuical University.  He now definitely is a Miami Dolphins fan!  He had a wonderful time visting with Dylan's family!

Providing Each Other Feedback

During writing, we have been learning about providing showing details to provide imagery as we are writing.  Today, your child wrote about a setting without using the names.  Then they asked a peer to guess their location.  The partners then helped each other add an additional sentence to their piece to make their location even more clear.  Working together and providing feedback is a great way to help them improve as writers.

Reflective Readers

Students are learning that good readers reflect as they read.  In class, students are encouraged to use post-its to reflect as they read.  They are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, make connections and visualize as they read.  Students document their thinking on post-its and share with the class.

Weather and Climate

This week we began our first science unit of the year, weather and climate.  We started by learning about why weather is important.  We created a list of questions that we have about the topic.  Over the next few weeks we will be learning about weather data collection tools and how meteorologists predict the weather.  We will also be researching about various severe weather.

Echo's Returned this Week

On Wednesday our first Echo returned from the cold, but beautiful Breezy Point, MN.  While there he learned all about the wildlife (deer, bears, and wolves) that live in this beautiful place.  He had a wonderful time with Hailey's grandparents and brought back lots of beautiful pictures of their deer "herd."

On Thursday, Sydney's Echo was returned from the beautiful weather in South Carolina.  Mrs. Kelly, one of our office staff who relocated last year, kept Echo busy on her visit.  She went fishing, to the pool and had time to go to the beach.

IXL Math

We have completed Chapters 1 and 2 in our Math in Focus program.  We will not be having an assessment on chapter 2 until later in the school year.  The concept is mental math and it is a concept that is embedded in the next few units of the math program so we will take the assessment at the end of these units.

We will be beginning Chapter 3 on Thursday in class.  I have given the students a list of correlated activities in IXL for these two units.  We will begin another cluster of activities in class for Chapter 3.  Here is a list of the activities your child has been working on in class.  You are welcome to work on any unfinished activities at home.  Your child has a login in his/her assignment notebook that he/she can use to log in at home.  This is optional but a great way to provide additional practice at home.

Map Skills Review Game

Today in class we reviewed for our map skills unit assessment by participating in Breakout EDU.  A breakout is similar to an escape room experience, except instead of trying to break out of a room you are trying to use clues to break into a box.

Today, the students' lunches were hidden somewhere in the school and they had to use all of the skills they have learned in our map skills unit to open each lock on the box to find the school map to help them find their lunches.

They had a wonderful time applying their learning and solving each map skill puzzle.  They were given 45 minutes to complete all the tasks, however, they had them all solved in just under 30 minutes!  Great job 3-4!
