Fraction Math Unit

Students have been doing an amazing job collaborating with each other to solve a variety of fraction thinking tasks! Our focus this week was comparing fractions.  Students discovered they can find equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number. They also used fraction tiles to compare fractions. The fraction unit test will be on Tuesday, April 24th. A review guide will be going home on Monday.

Persuasive Writing

Students began their final persuasive piece about the best pet! They looked at some models and brainstormed strong reasons to support their opinions. We began filling out our graphic organizers and will complete our final pieces next week.

Economy Unit

We started our new social studies unit: the economy! We focused on important terminology, like “buyers, sellers, market, goods, and services”. Students participated in a meaningful discussion about how people buy and sell goods. Students learned that there are costs and benefits when you purchase a good or service.

Using Context Clues and Figurative Language

This week, we worked on using context clues to figure out unknown words within a variety of texts. Students also practiced going back to the text to find evidence to support their answers. Using clues to determine the theme of the story was another area of focus.

We also spent time focusing on figurative language.  We learned about idioms, similes, metaphors, hyperbole and personification.  We will continue to analyze figurative language as we begin our poetry unit.
