Book Club

Do you love to read and talk about by books?  The PTA is sponsoring a book club which is a lot of fun!  See the information below.

Book Club begins on Monday, February 22, 2016.
Grades 1-5 will meet every Monday for four weeks during recess to read and discuss pre-assigned poetry. Each first and second grade participant will receive a poetry writing journal, and each participant in grades 3-5 will receive a book of poetry.
The 2016 Book Club Dates are: February 22, February 29, March 7 and March 14. There is no cost to the students for this program. Participating students will receive the chosen book or journal and a bookmark from the Dryden PTA!
Following book club, all students will attend an exciting in-school presentation by Bill Buczinky, a poet, performer, and teacher, on March 31.
Parents can volunteer to facilitate a group of students. Parents may choose to volunteer one day, but are encouraged to sign up for all four dates. Because recess runs from 12:20-12:50 PM, group facilitators will be asked to arrive at noon to get organized.
This event is solely sponsored by the PTA. School staff may not be present and have no responsibility for the event. Please direct all inquiries or concerns to the sponsoring PTA.
Please contact Mrs. Hintch or Mrs. Neri to register by February 5: bettyhintch@gmail.com or nyoung80@msn.com.

The Sun and the Moon

We have been learning about how we orbit the sun and the moon orbits the earth.  We created models this week to help us illustrate this concept.

We also learned about the phases of the moon and why the moon can look different in the sky.  We will be reviewing the moon next week and they will be taking a quiz on the moon the following week.

Lines, Line Segments, Rays and Polygons- Oh My!

We have been learning about lines, line segments, rays, and polygons.  We have learned about how to draw and label various shapes.  This is a very important part of geometry.  You can help your child at home when reviewing for this unit by asking them questions such as...

What is this shape called?
Did you label all the points and rays in the image you drew?
How would you name this shape?

Northeast States and Capitals Test

We have conquered the Midwest and now we are off to the Northeast region to learn the identification of each state's location and it capital.  A letter came home today with a blank map for you to use to help your child practice along with an answer key.  You can help your child learn these locations by focusing on a few states each night/ week to help them be successful.  We also cut out notecards to take home so that you can review these with them to help them be successful.  The test will be Tuesday, February 9th.  Happy studying!

Daytime and Nighttime Models

Last week we began our study of the solar system.  The students observed the sun throughout the day.  This week the students were asked to create a model.  They were asked to design a model using a variety of resources to demonstrate how we get daytime and nighttime.  They needed to explain their thinking.  After they shared their ideas with the class, we learned how the earth's rotation creates day and night. Here are some pictures of them working on their models.
