Baseball Multiplication
On Friday we played baseball multiplication in class. I am posting the link here. It is a great way to help the students can practice their math facts over break. Your child can log into their Everyday Math account, but this link takes you directly to it and it is open to the public to play. Just look at the top of the column labeled two players. You can choose to play with factors 1-6 or with factors 1-12.

Midwest
We have begun our next Social Studies unit- The Midwest. Yesterday, we learned about the land in the Midwest and how we are known for our plains and lakes. We also labeled a map yesterday in class and came up with ways to learn their locations. We sent it home yesterday. Today, we learned about the forests and prairies. We also cut out flashcards to bring home to help us practice our states and capitals. During this unit, your child will be required to learn the locations of each of the Midwestern states and each capital. Please practice the state locations and capitals with your child. This will help him towards the end of the unit.
Solar System Research
Today we taped our solar system videos in the LMC. We practiced and then created our videos. Stay tuned! They will be posted on the blog for your viewing pleasure soon!

Math Enrichment
In your child's Friday Folder is the Unit Two math enrichment activities. There is a letter attached explaining the activities. We are now on Unit Three and using different activities in the classroom, so I am sending them home in case you would like to work on them at home with your child. Some of them are quite challenging, so this is OPTIONAL. Some parents have asked for more complex activities to do at home and here are some great activities that you can do that are correlated to our math program. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Unit Three Math- Measurement
This week we have been focusing on measurement in math class. Your child has been learning about how to measure to the nearest fourth of an inch. They have also been working on measuring to the nearest half a centimeter and to the nearest millimeter. In one activity we did this week, the students estimated different objects in the classroom to the nearest inch and nearest centimeter. In addition, we started learning about perimeter and area.
Science- The Sun
We have been learning about the Sun and why it is so important to our Earth. We have been observing the sun and observing the shadows it makes throughout the day. The students had a great time today creating their own models to help explain why we have daytime and nighttime. We will start learning about the moon next week.

Writing Words for October
Our “Writing Words” program is designed to focus on high frequency writing words that are often misspelled in writing. By the end of the school year, there are 80 common words that the third graders are expected to spell correctly in their writing.
At the beginning of each month, your child will receive a list of that month’s “Writing Words.” These words will be posted on the wall in the classroom, and the children are expected to learn how to spell these words correctly by the end of the month. We will do some practice here at school, but they will also need to study these words at home. Each month, there may be some homonyms on the list like there, their, and they’re. In addition to knowing how to spell these words, they will be expected to know when to use the appropriate one. At the end of the month, they will take a test on these words. Once they have been tested on these words, they will be held accountable for spelling them correctly in their writing for the rest of the school year.

Reading
In reading this week, we have been working on documenting our thinking. We have been focusing on what good readers do as they read. We have been using post-its to share our thoughts as we are reading.
We have been focusing on specific strategies:
-making predictions
-making connections
-asking questions
-inferring
-making visualizations
We will be continue to practice these strategies over the next few weeks.
Say Cheese!
This is just a reminder that Picture Day is Thursday! If you are interested in ordering pictures, please return the money to school by this day. Thanks!

Country Map Project
Your child will be creating a country map at home. We discussed it in class today and went over the directions. Your child also started a rough draft in class today and brought it home in their Take Home Folder. I have created a video to help you through the steps. This project is due on Friday, September 30th. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Math- Unit Two and Differentiation
We have finished Unit One! We are now beginning Unit Two. This unit focuses on addition and subtraction. We also will be focusing on addition and subtraction number stories. During
class, your child took a pre-test to help me understand further what they currently
know about the math unit we are about to begin in class. Based upon your child's responses, your child may participate in an enrichment activity. There will be a mini-lesson to begin each lesson and after the mini-lesson, your child will be working on differentiated activities that are at a higher level if they have demonstrated mastery of the current lesson. Enrichment will take place on on a lesson-by-lesson basis. This will help the students each grow individually.
